چکیده

We studied Langmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett monolayers from amphiphiles with traditional (carboxylic) and bulky functionalized (epoxy) terminal groups at the air–water and air–solid interfaces. We demonstrated that the molecules with a central azobenzene fragment and carboxylic (AA-1 molecule) and bulky epoxy (AE-1 molecule) polar groups formed orthorhombic unit cells with larger than expected area per alkyl tail. The higher order of symmetry indicated by the appearance of higher Qxy peaks revealed that the alkyl tails formed a herringbone structure with limited long range ordering. In the condensed monolayer, the azobenzene group of the AA-1 molecules was oriented vertically in contrast to the AE-1 molecule that was significantly tilted. In addition, the presence of the bulky epoxy focal groups caused a less dense lateral packing of the azobenzene groups. We suggest that the bulky focal group causes intramonolayer packing which can enhance the ability of the chemically grafted azobenzene groups for photoisomerization. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. Cholic acid-derived facial amphiphiles with different ionic characteristics.

A cholate derivative with three epoxide groups was synthesized from cholic acid by allylation followed by epoxidation. Ring opening of the epoxides by various nucleophiles yielded facial amphiphiles with anionic, cationic, or nonionic functional groups. The critical micelle concentrations of these amphiphiles largely depend on the number of charged groups on the molecule. A facial amphiphile wi...

Model calculations of Langmuir monolayers: Pressure effects on tilting behavior of idealized amphiphiles

Model calculations of Langmuir monolayers: Pressure effects on tilting behavior of idealized amphiphiles" (1996). Model amphiphiles consisting of lines of Lennard-Jones ͑LJ͒ centers are investigated to determine the effect of pressure and molecular geometry on ground-state tilting behavior. Both the amphiphile length and the intramolecular distance between LJ centers is varied. The results give g...

Phase Behaviour of Amphiphilic Monolayers: Theory and Simulation

Coarse grained models of monolayers of amphiphiles (Langmuir monolayers) have been studied theoretically and by computer simulations. We discuss some of the insights obtained with this approach, and present new simulation results which show that idealised models can successfully reproduce essential aspects of the generic phase behaviour of Langmuir monolayers.

Single-step DNA immobilization on antifouling self-assembled monolayers covalently bound to silicon (111).

Hydrosilylation of alkenes with epoxide-terminated tri(ethylene oxide) moieties on Si-H surfaces yields homogeneous monolayers for the efficient coupling of biomolecules. The wetting properties of the epoxide-functionalized surface allow for the spotting of solutions of biomolecules, making the surface amenable to microarraying. Immobilization of thiolated DNA was achieved in a single step to f...

Langmuir monolayer miscibility of perfluorocarboxylic acids with biomembrane constituents at the air-water interface.

Over the past two or three decades, Langmuir monolayers comprising various fluorinated amphiphiles such as perfluorinated, partially fluorinated, and fluorinated-hydrogenated hybrid molecules at the air-water interface, have been investigated to deepen the understanding of their characteristic phenomena and to explore the mutual interaction of these amphiphiles with biomembrane constituents. La...
